Museum volunteer
I have been a volunteer steward at the Wymondham Heritage Museum for eight years. There are over 100 volunteers involved with the daily running of the museum which reflects the history and people of Wymondham.
My job is to welcome visitors and hopefully answer any questions that are asked. Some people want to look at every exhibit and read every description, while others come to look at certain things of special interest. Visitors are always fascinated to learn that the museum building was originally a prison dating from 1785. Children particularly like to see our recreated dungeon area downstairs.
As well as a steward I am also responsible for the running of our gift shop, which involves selling souvenirs and books of local interest. Most visitors like to buy a reminder of their visit to us. So it is important that the gifts reflect the museum's history.
Incidentally, the counter in the shop is the original bench used by magistrates when the museum building was once a courthouse. Due to the large number of visitors this week, including several school parties, I have had to re-order more stock on several items! I was on duty at the museum this weekend and it was a Bank Holiday. We were very busy; lots of visitors took advantage of our special two for one special offer on admissions.
