Wymondham Parish Gilds in the Early Sixteenth Century by Brenda Garrard
Religious gilds were very popular fraternities in pre-Reformation Wymondham to which men and women could belong. Gild members' adopted a patron saint whom they served through prayer and keeping a light burning in the parish church. In return the saint's help was sought in releasing their souls from purgatory after death. The author also explores the social and economic benefits of gild membership.
