The Wymondham Heritage Society is a local amenity society affiliated to the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) Norfolk and the Norfolk Rural Community Council. It has a good relationship with the Town Council. Through all these contacts it seeks to maintain and enhance the character of the historic market town of Wymondham and the surrounding countryside.

The Wymondham Heritage Society, a registered charity, has been much involved with the history and environment of the town for many years. It runs the Wymondham Heritage Museum and its members have a long track record of writing books and pamphlets on a variety of local historical themes which are sold in its shop and by local booksellers.

Its latest, and in some ways its most ambitious, publishing venture is Wymondham: History of a Norfolk Market Town. This new, well illustrated history incorporates much recent research and reflects the increasing interest of local people and visitors in the origins and history of the town.

It is the first attempt since 1949 to explore Wymondham’s long and interesting history. Written by a team of experienced local historians who belong to the Society’s History Committee, it tells the story of Wymondham from earliest times to the latest changes to the town and includes:

  • The establishment of a market
  • Kett’s Rebellion
  • The building and the dissolution of the Abbey
  • The fire of 1615, a serious case of arson
  • Agriculture
  • The textile and brush making industries
  • The coming of the railway
  • The two World Wars
